Nathan Kwan | The Double Alternative Movie Poster
Nathan's poster for The Double is so intriguing, both because of its concept and its design. The concept is strong–and can be portrayed in such seemingly simple and easy-to-understand visuals. The subtleties in the colors, like the bag under the left-most eye, is visually interesting. Furthermore, it's worthy noting the way that the two figures overlap in a way to create a third color: it is done not how colors mix but how light mixes. This makes the poster feel dimensional, and demonstrates how color can really elevate shape design and composition.
I sneeze a lot while making picture books and animation designs. And the occasional poster!
"The Double" is a 2013 film based on the poem by Fyodor Dostoevsky about a man down on his luck that meets his doppelganger who is his reverse in every way. I found this movie as a fan of director Richard Ayoade's comedy and the black comedy in the film lends well with the dark undertones. The movie's production design is very minimal, so I went with a minimal design approach as well. Reversed emotions and reversed/complementary colors. The theatrical poster I saw didn't convey anything about the plot and was stagnantly composed, simply two front facing busts of the male and female leads against a black background.
Nathan's favorite films are Coraline, Sullivan's Travels, Stand By Me, Inglorious Bastards.
