Josie Brett | Last Night in SoHo Alternative Poster
This is one of the most interesting posters that have been submitted to the studio because of the simplistic yet effective abstraction of the film and imagery. The film has a retro feel, yet is sleek and modern–and that visual language aligns well with the film. The record in the eye is an interesting touch because it seems like it could be an obvious solution, but does not feel cliche or typical. The knife and tear/drop is a really interesting touch and this poster, without text or context, would still work as a great piece of art.
I like to keep things simple when creating art (especially movie posters). I redesign them for my own pleasure and to stretch my artistic muscle. And I enjoy sharing them with the world.
Last Night in Soho is about a young aspiring fashion designer who is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s, where she meets dazzling and aspiring singer Sandie - but all is not as it seems. I was influenced by the Bauhaus style for this poster, which lent itself to the simplicity of the design as well as the saturation of color while watching the film. I also enjoyed designing a poster for a movie I hadn't seen yet, because it really made me focus on key imagery. The knife, the eye, and the record all figure heavily in the plot of the film. The drop coming from the knife tip is blood (which there is a lot of). The crooked lines, shattered glass (which there is also a lot of). With this poster I hoped to convey the sense of seeing not always being believing.
